Case 105: Radiofrequency Ablation (RFA)

Diagnostic Category:

Clinical Presentation:

63 year old man presents for surveillance after radiofrequency ablation (RFA) of known HCC.

CT: HCC, local tumor progression - small

Imaging Findings:

Multiphase CT reveals local recurrence of HCC, 19 months after radio-frequency ablation (RFA). The first row of images shows hypervascular tissue along the posteromedial margin of the ablation zone, with subtle wash out in the equilibrium phase, consistent with local tumor recurrence. The second row of images was obtained before RFA, showing a hypervascular mass with washout in the equilibrium phase. Notice the fibrous pseudocapsule in the equilibrium phase. Biopsy confirmed well differentiated HCC.
