Case 163:   Schistosomiasis (Bilharzia)

Diagnostic Categories:

Clinical Presentation:

58 year old Egyptian man with cirrhosis.

CT: Periportal fibrosis, dominant in the left lobe, cirrhosis.

Imaging Findings:

CT demonstrates cirrhosis and typical fibrosis within the portal triads due to Schistosomiasis, which causes narrowing of the portal veins intrahepatically. Note that portal venous phase CT shows fibrotic tissue elements as hypovascular, while fibrotic enhancement would be typically seen on equilibrium phase, which was not available.
