Case 168: Steatosis / Steatohepatitis
48 year old asymptomatic woman with hepatitis C.
CT: Acute hypodense swelling of the central zone of the liver
CT shows a large area of central hepatic steatosis has low density on all phases. Note absent mass effect on vessels ("vessel penetration sign"), which is typical. Core biopsy demonstrated fatty infiltration. A CT approximately 1 year before this was normal (not shown). Nine months follow up CT demonstrates shrunken liver and ascites reprepsenting cirrhosis and portal hypertension as a long term complication of the acute inflammation.
