Case 211: Transarterial Chemoembolization (TACE)

Diagnostic Category:

Clinical Presentation:

40 year old woman with a palpable right flank lump.

CT: With "scar", lipiodol deposition

Imaging Findings:

CT before and after transarterial chemoembolisation. Portal venous enhancement with washout on the equilibrium phase typical for HCC. Note non enhancing large central scar.  CT one day following TACE via the right hepatic artery demonstrates significant desired lipiodol deposition within the HCC.

Pathology specimen one year after TACE  demonstrates yellow necrotic tumor portions peripherally, partly corresponding to areas of lipiodol deposition.

MRI exam of same patient pre-therapy can be accessed here.
