Case 220:   Echinococcosis, cystic (hydatid)

Diagnostic Category:

Clinical Presentation:

58 year old woman with abdominal pain. The patient reported travel history to Mexico and Jamaica.

CT: WHO type CE2, with daughter cysts

Imaging Findings:

CT demonstrates a large hydatid cyst in segment 4, WHO classification type CE2. Note that the dominant cyst has mildly higher attenuation than the peripheral smaller daughter cysts due to debris and proteinaceous components. Higher attenuation of cyst contents corresponds to increased T1 signal on MR.
