Case 220:   Echinococcosis, cystic (hydatid)

Diagnostic Category:

Clinical Presentation:

58 year old woman with abdominal pain. The patient reported travel history to Mexico and Jamaica.

MR: WHO type CE2: Hyperintense content on T1w in dominant cyst, daughter cysts

Imaging Findings:

MR demonstrates a large, hydatid cyst WHO classification type CE2 in segment 4. The mass has a high T1 signal intensity and demonstrates  small peripheral daughter cysts along its anterior and posterior aspect.  The high T1 signal of the dominant cyst is due to proteinaceous components and debris. Compare to increased attenuation on CT.
