Case 241: Radiofrequency Ablation (RFA)

Diagnostic Category:

Clinical Presentation:

55 year old man with a history of hepatitis C cirrhosis, status post radiofrequency ablation (RFA) of hepatocellular carcinoma in hepatic segment 6. Surveillance CT and ultrasound were performed three months after the procedure.

CT: HCC progression into ablation zone

Imaging Findings:

Coronal reconstructions of 4-phase CT show hypodense ablation zone in segment 6 within the cirrhotic, steatotic liver.  At 11 o'clock a small hypervascular focus without clear washout on equilibrium phase has developed representing local tumor progression of HCC into the ablation zone.
