Case 241: Radiofrequency Ablation (RFA)

Diagnostic Category:

Clinical Presentation:

55 year old man with a history of hepatitis C cirrhosis, status post radiofrequency ablation (RFA) of hepatocellular carcinoma in hepatic segment 6. Surveillance CT and ultrasound were performed three months after the procedure.

US: HCC progression into ablation zone

Imaging Findings:

Intercostally obtained ultrasound shows local HCC progression after RFA: the tumor is the small hypoechoic mass almost in the center of the echogenic ablation zone. Note prominent hook shaped artery at the margin of the ablation zone, representing a small feeding vessel or arterio-venous shunt.
