Case 274:   Metastasis - Salivary Gland Cancer

Diagnostic Category:

Clinical Presentation:

62 year old woman with salivary gland cancer, hypodense liver lesions seen on staging CT.

US: Parotid gland adenocarcinoma

Imaging Findings:

Ultrasound of segment 3 shows a homogeneously echogenic metastasis with a hypoechoic rim (arrows) and mild vascularity on Color Doppler exam. Even though no target sign typical for metastasis of adenocarcinoma is present, the hypoechoic rim is a typical, but not specific feature of carcinoma metastases. The hypoechoic halo is mainly thought to represent perifocal edema.
