Case 325: Bacterial Infection
45 year old man with common variable immunodeficiency and recent history of night sweats and unintentional weight loss. Work-up showed elevated LFT's.
US: Atypical bacterial infection
Gray-scale sagittal image through the right hepatic lobe demonstrates mildly hypoechoic liver parenchyma along the periphery (arrows).
Patient underwent a biopsy in the same session, which revealed inflammation and filamentous bacteria (likely Actinomyces). Patient also had Actinomyces infection in the lungs, seen on culture of bronchial secretions and was treated successfully with antibiotics.
