Case 372:   Abscess (pyogenic)

Diagnostic Category:

Clinical Presentation:

85 year-old man with fever. Sonographic search for source of fever.

CT: Ill-defined mass in segment 3

Imaging Findings:

Unenhanced CT demonstrates small bilobed appearing well defined hypodense mass in segment 3 with thick perifocal hypodense rim, suggestive of edema. Sections of the liver slightly more superior demonstrate more smaller locules surrounded by edema.

Mass represents an abscess, but is incompletely characterized without administration of intravenous iodinated contrast, which was precluded due to poor renal function at the time of the exam.

See contrast enhanced ultrasound of this case.
